Summers in the Kansas City area are often very hot and dry and is a critical time to make sure you are properly caring for your yard to avoid many problems that can occur in these harsh conditions.

Always remember that proper fertilizing, watering and mowing is imperative to having a thick, green lawn with less weeds.

The rule of thumb for mowing is to cut your lawn at the correct height and never cut more than 1/3 of an inch of the turf area at any one mowing. For Fescue and Bluegrass , a recommended height of 3 inches is ideal and will help control those unsightly weeds. For Zoysia a recommended height of 1 to 2 inches will be sufficient.

Watering is also very important and if done improperly, can cause unwanted and costly problems. The most beneficial time of watering is from 1:00am to 7:00am and should be watered in at a 4 inch depth. Heavy waterings will provide the soil with sufficient moisture and will not require watering for 5 - 7 days prior. If unable to water a optimal times, then watering between 12:00pm and 4:00pm would be the next most beneficial time. Also remember to avoid watering between 7:00am and 11:00am and between 4:00pm and 12:00 midnight . Watering at these times will cause your yard to stay damp for extended periods of time and can increase the chance of turf disease.
